What I learned first from Max was about hard work. We would go on rides and he would half-wheel me, ride hard into the wind, with the wind, uphill, downhill and everything between. I used to think “why the hell do we need to ride so hard?” I was new to the sport so that, or much else really, just didn’t occur to me as to why it was done. He never really talked about the difficulty of the rides or races and as I got used to it I realized why. Hard work was just what it took, and if you had to be told that over and over you would never get it. If you want to be a professional, especially, or if you just want to be your best that’s one of the most important things.
I would say that I don’t know anyone else who has been around the sport longer, in as many different ways, and with as much motivation as Max. If it has two wheels he’s ridden it, trained on it, raced it, won on it, lost on it, crashed it, and coached other people on how to do it too. Lots of experience.
(Retired Pro-Mountain Bike Racer, Bronze Medal - Master’s World Mtn. Biking Championships, 5 time Texas State Mtn. Bike Champion, 2 time Tx State Crit Champion, Tx. State Road Race Champion, Master’s National Mixed Tandem Time Trial Champion (w/Max Miley), USARA Tx State Sprint Adventure Race Champion, USARA National Sprint Adventure Race Champion)
Every athlete is engineered differently, and Max has the extraordinary ability to figure out what drives each of us, and ultimately he pushes the right buttons to send us to the next level, no matter where you start from. My fondest memory of his coaching ability was on our weekly, hilly, windy, 100 miler. He would attack each consecutive hill harder and harder, trying to drop me, until he finally busted me and made me cry as I saw the colors of his jersey fade to a blur in the Texas heat as he crested hill number 82 somewhere between Montague and Forestburg, leaving me behind in a trail of tears. My legs were screaming at me from their cramped, dehydrated state, and the pain I felt now from the emotional turmoil of being dropped made it even harder to find that evasive oxygen I was in need of. Why would my coach do this to me?
I received my answer over the coming weeks, as these weekly 100 milers only made me stronger, and soon, any course a race director could dish out seemed easy in comparison. The State Road Race Championship was on a steep hill country course that summer, and as the hills clicked by, I could only smile when I crossed the uphill sprint finish line in 1st place…there was a reason for this Max Madness!
Max trained many of my early workouts with me, and eventually, enabled me to have the tools I needed to train on my own, along with my custom training program he wrote for me. He didn’t just tell me to do something, but rather, he showed me how to do it first, and what hard work meant. Only then could I realize my potential.
"Max knows how to get the best out of his athletes both physically and mentally because everything in his program has a specific purpose. He knows exactly when and how to push it to the edge and when to back off in order to be 100% prepared. Through years of experience and a full understanding of what hard work truly is he has taken himself and others to the next level. Max knows it is the desire within the athlete to shape themselves into their best, and he is an expert at chiseling away the rough edges."

Max I hope this email reaches you. My wife, Laura, and I were in Dallas for our
annual physical exams at the Cooper Clinic on November 30th. For the past
several years, I have done a VO2Max test under the supervision of Conrad
Earnest in his lab at the Cooper Research Institute. This year's testing
showed significant improvement in all my scores. I am happy about that.
I heard the Cat I guys are still trying to catch up with you! That is
pretty inspiring! And that's what this email is all about. I'm sure you
never realized it, but you have been a major influence on improving my
health. In 2000 at age 59 when I first got on the bike I weighed 214, had
border-line high blood pressure, and high cholesteral even with medications.
Today I weigh 183 (hopefully headed for 173), have 110/70 blood pressure,
113 cholesteral with no medications, and enjoy substantial improvement in
physical and cycling fitness.
Laura and I started training correctly with you in the Team in Training
program for the Tahoe Century in 2001. We have continued to ride and train
actively. It is a priority in our lives and these good habits started with
your training disciplines and methods in 2001. It is a way of life!
Thanks, Max!
I can attribute a huge part of my accomplishing my century to my coaches,
especially our head coach Max Miley. He was extremely dedicated to
helping us improve at every juncture and always provided sound advice -
even if I was slow to take it. My weakness during training was climbing
and Max was amazingly patient with me as I continued to learn the best
techniques to improve. He would keep me engaged on the task at hand and
by doing so got me to my goal and I am eternally grateful for that.
Max has an amazing ability to work with cyclists at all levels and all ages. His encouragement always challenged me to do more, better and faster than I thought possible.
A friend said to me “Let’s do a bike ride for charity”. Of course I responded “That sounds like fun”. With that two sentence conversation my journey into the world of cycling fitness began. I didn’t own a bicycle, I didn’t know the “ride for charity” was 100 miles and I didn’t know that the ride was around Lake Tahoe.
One week later however, I met Max and began a fantastic journey. Through the Lukemia Society’s Team In Training program Max became my coach. He helped me pick out a bicycle that was right for me, he laid out the training plan and made it fun.
When disaster struck and broke my arm on our first training ride (Not Max’s Fault, those darn clip on shoes) Max helped me find a training program that let me keep moving toward the goal of riding that 100 miles. I worked on a stationery bicycle first then as the date of the ride drew closer and it looked like my arm wouldn’t be out of the cast in time. Max came up with the idea to put me on the back of a tandem where I could ride without having to brake or change gears. It worked GREAT! By the day of the ride I was in shape and ready to go. My tandem partner and I took on the ride and accomplished our goal. Thanks to Max I was in shape, had a new hobby, and had helped out a great cause too!
And the story didn’t end there, when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer a year after that ride, Max rode in my honor closing the circle on the journey that brought us together as coach and student and more importantly as friends.Max is an excellent coach who literally works his tail off to accommodate a diverse range of individuals and individual abilities to bring out the best in performance both from a mental and physical standpoint. I have seen Max fine tune good riders and take beginners from couch potatoes to century riders.
Thanks to you Max, I am now one of the spankers rather than one of the spankees on my normal group rides.
My name is Frank Sohm I am a masters bicycle racer. Last year I contacted
Max Miley and asked if he would coach me the upcoming race season. We set
up a meeting and we discussed my goals for the race season. Max laid out a
dailey training program ,targeting each specific race I planned to do,
checking on my weekly progress and reviewing each race . The results were
great, I was competitive for every race I competed in and my ultimate goal
was to win a state championship, that was done in the master 60+ road race,I
was so excited and know that if one wants to be winner it great to have a
coach that is a winner. Max is a great coach and shows interest in one as
an individual.
